March 2011

Shrimp Trade Adjustment and Assistance

Shrimp fishermen who have completed the orientation phase of the Trade Adjustment and Assistance (TAA) program are eligible to move into the next phase.

Phase 2 begins the “intensive training” portion of the program. To be eligible, shrimpers must have completed the “initial orientation” by attending one of the Louisiana Sea Grant/LSU AgCenter workshops, or by taking the training online. Individuals who attended both sessions of these workshops in November and December 2010, or in February and March 2011, received both initial orientation training and MarketMaker training. MarketMaker represented three hours of the 12 hours of intensive technical training required by TAA.

Each upcoming intensive training location will hold three workshops over a two-day period. The first day will consist of two workshops lasting roughly three hours each. The second day will offer an additional three hour workshop. To receive a full nine hours of credit toward the intensive technical training requirement, shrimpers must attend both days.

The last workshop will be on how to develop a business plan. This workshop will also cover the requirements for completing the “initial business” plan.

Given the large number of fishermen and the capacity of workshop locations, all producers must have preregister to attend workshops. When reregistering, keep in mind participants will need to preregister for two days in order to get the full nine hours of intensive technical training credit. The AgCenter will offer additional workshops in June or July during the break in shrimp season. Shrimpers will receive a letter with information about those workshops later in the year.

Eligible producers should have received a notification letter with a list of meeting locations and dates. The intensive technical training courses also have been made available online through the TAA website: www.TAAforFarmers.org .
