Special
Commission Meeting Scheduled to Consider Early Shrimp Season
Opening in Shrimp Management Zone 2

The Louisiana
Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has scheduled a special
meeting on Wednesday, April 26, at 9:30 a.m. to review the
most recent biological data presented by the Louisiana Department
of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and consider opening dates
for the 2006 spring inshore shrimp season in Shrimp Management
Zone 2. Zone II comprises that portion of state waters from
the eastern shore of South Pass of the Mississippi River to
the western shore of Vermilion Bay and Southwest Pass at Marsh
Island.
The special
meeting will be held at LDWF headquarters at 2000 Quail Drive
in Baton Rouge. The agenda follows:

Unseasonably
mild water temperatures extending from January, low Mississippi
and Atchafalaya River discharge rates and drought-like conditions
throughout Louisiana's estuaries have combined to produce
highly favorable shrimp growing conditions this spring. High
survival of early recruited shrimp and rapid growth rates
have produced shrimp sizes above the long-term mean for this
period in some areas. However, changes in environmental conditions
or additional recruitment of small shrimp into these estuaries
may not allow for an earlier than normal opening.
The regular
monthly meeting of the commission will be held as planned
on May 4 at 9:30 a.m. at LDWF headquarters in Baton Rouge
to set the opening dates for Zones 1 and 3, as well as Zone
2 provided this date is not set at the special April 26 commission
meeting.
