                  The Louisiana
Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Inland Fisheries
Division will release 59,000 bass into the Red River on Dec.
15 at the Grand Ecore landing located in Natchitoches.
                  The Red
River Waterways Commission (RRWC) donated $50,000 to the Louisiana
Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation, who then distributed the
funds to LDWF for the procurement of the bass. This will mark
the fifth consecutive year that the RRWC has donated money
to purchase bass for the Red River.
                  The bass
are 100 percent Florida largemouth bass and largemouth bass
virus free. The 5-to-7-inch bass are considered phase II fingerlings.
These bass are released to help introduce their superior genetic
traits to the Red River that will in turn produce larger bass
                    for local anglers.
                  "LDWF
is very grateful for RRWC's generous donation that will improve
the bass population in the Red River," said Tim Morrison,
LDWF program manager. "These Florida largemouth bass
will improve both the quantity and quality of the catch, which
is great news for Louisiana anglers."
                  LDWF stocks
millions of Florida strain largemouth bass into Louisiana
waterways each year. Facilities such as the Booker Fowler
Fish Hatchery in central Louisiana support management plans
with production of bass fry each spring.
