LDWF Delays Opening of the 2005-06 Oyster Sesaon on all Public Grounds East of the Mississippi River
Posted: 10/13/05

The 2005-06 oyster season opening has been delayed on all the public oyster seed grounds located east of the Mississippi River, including the Bay Gardene Public Oyster Seed Reservation and the Lake Borgne Public Oyster Seed Ground.

This delay will take effect at one-half hour before sunrise on Monday, Oct. 17, 2005 and will remain in place until further notice. The delay has been ordered by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Secretary Dwight Landreneau based on hurricane-related oyster mortalities that have significantly reduced available oyster stocks in the area. The delay was also ordered to protect the remaining oyster resources located in the area and to protect the successful spat set (reproductive event) documented during post-hurricane sampling by LDWF marine biologists.

All other public oyster seed ground season dates remain unchanged as originally adopted by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission.
